I am not a school or college in Cambridgeshire, can I still purchase the software?
Due to copyright issues with the artwork contained in the Cambridge Version of the Art Collection, only Cambridgeshire schools / colleges and universities may currently purchase the software. However we are in discussions with related parties, so please register your interest on the Register page and we hope it is not too long until we can offer a national product.
When I perform a search I cannot see the entire set of artwork anymore.
When you search in The Art Collection, the software creates a subset of the items matching your criteria only items not matching are temporarily hidden from view but dont worry they havent been deleted or removed! Clicking Show All will bring all items back to view.
When all items are visible looking at the top right of the screen will show "All items" and underneath the navigation buttons "Item x of 450".
When a search has been performed, and a subset of items are shown, it will change to show "Found Items" indicating only a subset of items is being currently browsed, with the information below showing the actual number, e.g. "Item 1 of 48".
To view all items in the collection, click the Show All toolbar button.
Tip: Searching always operates on the entire set of items, so you do not have to Show All before performing another search.
Why does searching for the Keyword "Cambridge" produce results including "Cambridgeshire" as well as "Cambridge"?
The search system has been designed to be very flexible to ensure all associated items are found. Hence searching for Cambridge will find all items where Cambridge is all or part of a keyword, hence Cambridgeshire items are also returned. Similarly searching for Water will also find any references with items having Watercolour in their Keywords.
How do I sort or change the order of artwork in the Art Collection?
Go to the List View and you can sort by any available fields by clicking the field title. When you return to the Artwork view, the collection remains sorted in your last order.
How do I return the sort order to the original order?
The Art Collection is initially sorted by Reference Number. To re-sort by Reference Number, go to the List View and click the Ref No field title at the top.
After performing a search I lose the sorted order when showing all items again.
If you have performed a search and then return to showing all items (by clicking Show All), you will loose your sort order. In affect the collection will become partially sorted. To sort again by any of the available fields use the List View as described above.
How do I view an item from the list?
Simply click the thumbnail image of the item shown in the list, to view the artwork screen.
What is the reference number of each item?
The reference number is the County Council archive number for the actual item of artwork in the collection, it is not continuous, and you will notice that many numbers are missing. We have included this original number, as at a later stage you may be able to hire some artwork from the collection for your school or college, and the reference number will play an important part.
Items referenced 1000 and above are related items / photographs and are not a core part of the collection, being directly copyright to their associated artists.
How do I jump to a specific numbered item?
Perform a search for the reference number you require, when found, you can then Show All items you will remain on this numbered item, but have the entire collection left to view.
I cannot print from The Art Collection?
The copyright limitations of the artwork in The Art Collection prevent us from providing any printing facilities in the software.
How do I return to the Artwork screen from the enlarged view?
Simply click the picture to return.
Can I run a slide show in the enlarged view?
Yes, simply enlarge any item, then click the Slide Show button on the toolbar
Lexmark printer drivers conflict with The Art Collection.
Some older Lexmark printer drivers when installed in Windows can interfere with The Art Collection software. This is due to conflicts between Windows and Lexmark the only way to solve this problem is to remove any Lexmark drivers.
The software is slow when listing / sorting all items on my computer.
There are 450 high resolution photographs within the Art Collection and therefore the faster the computer the faster the response time. Listing and sorting items is the most intensive function and older less powerful computers will take a few moments.
The software takes longer to load on my laptop than desktop.
The Art Collection will perform better on desktop computers with fast hard drives than laptops, which usually have slower hard drives.
How can I increase performance of The Art Collection?
Macintosh allocate more memory to the Application using the Get Info and Memory settings as with all Mac software (OS7.5/8/9 only). Ensure that other applications are not running at the same time.
Windows shut other applications down before running The Art Collection.
The photographs do not appear in enough colours.
Ensure your display / monitor settings are using at least 16-bit (thousands) colour, and preferably 24-bit (millions). The software will not be able to show accurate colours in 256 colour modes.
The Art Collection doesnt fit the screen.
The software is expressly designed to fit 1024 x 768 pixel screens only, it will not fit or run properly on 800 x 600 as there isnt enough physical room to show all the information. If you have a display running a higher resolution that 1024 x 768 please step it down to 1024 x 768 for The Art Collection.
When pressing keys on the keyboard I get an alert on the screen.
If you are browsing the software, and press keys on the keyboard you may see the following alert, "Before typing, press Tab, click in a field, or choose the New Record menu command". This is an alert which cannot be suppressed at present (and is important at the creation stages) so please ignore it, and avoid hitting keys, unless you are typing in a search.
Some items do not fill the screen area.
This is for artistic purposes to change your view as you step through the collection, not all items will be full screen.
I am an organisation or individual with a collection - can this software be adapted / used for other collections?
Yes - the core software is (c) J9 Solutions (UK) Ltd, and we can work with other collections, museums, galleries and individuals to capture a new collection and tailor the software to suit - please contact us for further details.
